In November 2024, we invited participating Australian artists, Judy Watson, Robert Andrew, and Leah King-Smith to undertake immersive month-long residencies in Taiwan. Living and working alongside Indigenous artists Yuma Taru (尤瑪•達陸) and Akac Orat (Chen, Hao-yi 陳豪毅) in their communities, and collaborating with curators at the National Museum of Prehistory, the residencies created time and space for artists to engage in sustained and meaningful face-to-face exchange.
Embedded in local contexts, the program supported collaborative art-making, and the sharing of Indigenous knowledge and creative practices between artists, communities and partners.
Workshops in schools and communities, and public talks at museums and universities across the island, extended this exchange beyond the studio—creating vibrant spaces for learning, connection and creative cooperation.
This exchange deepened cross-cultural understanding and laid the groundwork for enduring relationships.
A feature-length documentary film captures the artists’ conversations, shared discoveries, and their collaborative creative processes and outcomes.
The new artworks developed through the residency will be presented in an international touring exhibition.
