The project took place over several stages, starting in 2021 with an International Symposium.
International symposium (2021)
A two-day conference that brought together artists, curators and scholars from Australia, Taiwan and New Zealand and Philippines (keynote). It was called Grounded in Place: Dialogues Between First Nations Artists from Aust. Taiwan and Aotearoa. It also included a film program – with a short film by Indigenous film makers from each place.
Field trips to Taiwan and Queensland (2023)
In 2023, the program facilitated a reciprocal exchange. Two Australian artists, Vernon Ah Kee and Mandy Quadrio, travelled to Taiwan and two Taiwanese artists, Ciwas Tahos (Anchi Lin, 林安琪) and Yuma Taru (尤瑪•達陸), travelled to Queensland.
Artist residencies (2024)
In November 2024, Australian artists Judy Watson, Robert Andrew, and Leah King-Smith undertook month-long residencies in central and eastern Taiwan. They lived and worked alongside Indigenous artists, Yuma Taru (尤瑪•達陸) and Akac Orat (Chen Hao-yi, 陳豪毅) in their communities, and collaborated with curators at the National Museum of Prehistory.
Documentary film
“In the Making: An Australia–Taiwan Indigenous Art Exchange” (生成之間: 澳洲與台灣原住民族藝術交流) is a 43-minute bilingual documentary (a co-production between Australia and Taiwan) exploring the significance of cross-cultural exchange between Indigenous artists from Australia and Taiwan engaged in a five-year exchange program.
