This international touring exhibition brings together works by Australian and Taiwanese Indigenous artists, developed through a dynamic ongoing process of cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration. It marks the culmination of the five-year Australia–Taiwan Indigenous Art Exchange, developed through sustained engagement with partners and participating artists from both regions.
The exhibition encompasses works developed during a month-long residency program in Taiwan in 2024, when Australian artists Judy Watson, Robert Andrew and Leah King-Smith lived and worked alongside Taiwanese Indigenous artists Yuma Taru (尤瑪•達陸) and Akac Orat (Chen, Hao-yi 陳豪毅), and engaged with museum photographic archives.
It also responds to earlier research phases of the exchange, including field trips involving Australian artists, Vernon Ah Kee and Mandy Quadrio, and Taiwanese artists Yuma Taru (尤瑪•達陸) and Ciwas Tahos (Lin, Anchi 林安琪).
The exhibition critically engages with themes of history, cultural continuity, and relationships between people, land, water and environment, reflecting the enduring knowledge systems and perspectives of Indigenous artists and their communities. It encompasses textile, new media, time-based and installation artworks, and a short documentary film that offers insight into the cross-cultural collaboration.
The exhibition will open in Sydney at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art in mid-2027, after which it will tour Australia and Taiwan.
